CHAPTER 16

As we get closer to the Salem Grand, I’m surprised that an early afternoon party's in progress. Expensively dressed people gather in small groups, clearly at home in the posh ambiance.

“A party? And we’re not invited?” Holly says.

“Mr. Farnsworth did invite us. I saw it on my itinerary, but I completely forgot about it. Let’s go later. I can’t wait to crack open Rosie’s diary and read her secrets.”

When we enter our suite, the temperature drops suddenly. It’s as if we’ve stepped into another world entirely. I quickly turn up the heat.

“That experience at the library was unreal,” Holly says quietly. “I couldn’t see Rosie’s ghost, but I felt her—you know what I mean?”

I nod, remembering the ghostly presence that guided us to the diary. “It’s like she’s still with us, watching our every move.”

With a sigh, I walk to the center of the room, setting the diary gently on the table. Its worn red leather cover, now a faded brick color, looks almost ordinary. But I sense the weight of the secrets it contains.

Jasper approaches the diary, his inquisitive snout sniffing at the moldy pages. For a moment, I swear I see a faint glow emanating from the book.

“Easy, boy, this isn’t a chew toy,” Holly says, moving him away.

Then she looks up at me with excitement. “Open it. Let’s see what’s inside.”

With trembling fingers, I turn to the first yellowed page. Rosie writes of her love for Eduardo, but her suspicion that his interest in her isn't sincere.

Then she writes of Eduardo’s interest in some of her grandmother’s occult practices, asking about secrets that have never left her family’s grimoire.

“I fear he tampers with powers beyond his comprehension,” I read to Holly from the diary, including the sections where Rosie obsesses over Eduardo.

“Jeez, she sounds like a love-crazed teen. Do you think he felt the same way about her?”

“It’s possible, but my gut tells me Eduardo was playing her. He had an agenda. You heard what Lillian said, he wanted access to her magical vault. And when she wouldn’t grant him access, he went after Rosie, trying to get his hands on her family’s grimoire.”

“"Sounds right.”

“But I don't understand why he cared about getting his hands on ancient magical lore. I mean, why bother? He was already a top Las Vegas illusionist.”

“Ha!” she says, turning towards me with an exasperated expression on her face. “It wouldn’t make sense to you because you’ve spent your whole life running away from magic. Running from your natural gift. Eduardo was the opposite of you. He wasn’t born with the gift, but he wanted the real thing. He wanted to master it.”

I bite my lower lip and turn away. Holly’s right. A chill overtakes me as I contemplate the implications of Eduardo’s obsession with gaining access to the dark arts.

“What else does Rosie write?” asks Holly, peering down at the pages. “Anything juicy? I bet you they were having an affair. Was he a good lover? What did she say?”

Shaking my head in amusement, I look back at the diary.
